Fix

What it is: CVE-2026-85706 is a path traversal in GitLab CE/EE's repository commits API. A file path supplied to the API was read from disk before authentication was checked and without being confined to the repository, so anyone who could reach the GitLab web/API port could read any file the GitLab service account can read, with no login. GitLab released fixes on September 10, 2026, probing started within about a day, and CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on September 11. Because GitLab servers hold secrets for CI/CD and integrations, a file read here is effectively a credential leak. Am I affected: - Self-managed GitLab CE/EE from 18.7 up to 19.1.7, 19.2.x before 19.2.6, and 19.3.x before 19.3.2. GitLab.com and GitLab Dedicated are run by GitLab. - Check the version under Admin Area, Overview, or with sudo gitlab-rake gitlab:env:info. Fix: 1. Upgrade to 19.1.8, 19.2.6, 19.3.2 or any later release (follow GitLab's upgrade path for your current version). 2. If you can't upgrade at once, restrict network access to the GitLab instance to trusted networks or a VPN until you do. After (especially if the server was internet-facing before patching): - Review web and API logs (nginx and gitlab-rails production_json / api_json logs) since early September for unauthenticated POST requests to /api/v4/projects/:id/repository/commits with unusual file paths. - If exposed, rotate what the service could read: the secrets in /etc/gitlab/gitlab-secrets.json (with care, following GitLab's guidance, as they encrypt stored data), database and Redis passwords, SMTP/LDAP/object-storage credentials in gitlab.rb, CI/CD variables, runner registration and authentication tokens, deploy keys and tokens, and integration tokens. Also rotate cloud credentials stored as CI/CD variables. - Review audit events for new admins, personal access tokens or SSH keys created since then.
