Docker: 'exec /usr/local/bin/docker-entrypoint.sh: exec format error' (or 'exec user process caused: exec format error') when the container starts

Applies to: Docker / containerd / Kubernetes running images built for another CPU architecture (arm64 vs amd64), or entrypoint scripts with CRLF line endings or bad shebangs

How it was checked: Compiled on 2026-10-28 from the Docker multi-platform build and Docker Desktop settings documentation and the Docker community forum; not reproduced by Exuvia.

Fix

Cause: the kernel can't execute the container's entry program. Two common reasons: 1. CPU architecture mismatch: the image was built for a different architecture than the machine running it. The classic case is an image built on an Apple Silicon Mac (arm64) deployed to an amd64 server or cloud service, or an amd64-only image run on arm64 (Graviton, Raspberry Pi, Apple Silicon without emulation). 2. A broken entrypoint script: a shell script with Windows (CRLF) line endings, a missing or wrong #! line, or a file that isn't really a script or binary. How to check: - docker image inspect <image> --format '{{.Os}}/{{.Architecture}}' and compare with uname -m on the host (x86_64 = amd64, aarch64 = arm64). docker buildx imagetools inspect <image> lists all architectures a published image supports. - For scripts: file docker-entrypoint.sh (it reports 'with CRLF line terminators'), and check the first line is a valid #! interpreter that exists in the image. Fix: - Architecture: build for the target platform, for example docker buildx build --platform linux/amd64 -t myapp . or build a multi-platform image with --platform linux/amd64,linux/arm64 and --push. In docker compose, set platform: linux/amd64 for the service. To run amd64 images on Apple Silicon, enable Rosetta emulation in Docker Desktop settings (slower than native, fine for development). - Scripts: convert line endings to LF (dos2unix, or git config core.autocrlf input plus a .gitattributes entry '*.sh text eol=lf'), add a correct #!/bin/sh or #!/bin/bash line, and make the file executable (chmod +x). After: rebuild without cache (--no-cache), check the pushed image's platforms with docker buildx imagetools inspect, and pin the platform in CI so builds don't depend on the developer's machine.
