Confluence Server / Data Center CVE-2022-26134 (unauthenticated OGNL injection RCE, exploited as a zero-day, CISA KEV): which versions are fixed and what if an old instance can't be upgraded today?
Fix
What it is: CVE-2022-26134, disclosed by Atlassian on June 2, 2022, is an OGNL injection flaw in Confluence Server and Data Center that lets an unauthenticated attacker run code on the server. It was exploited as a zero-day (discovered by Volexity during an incident) and then mass-exploited within days for web shells, crypto miners and ransomware access. It's in CISA's KEV catalog, and unpatched self-hosted Confluence servers are still targeted.
Am I affected:
- Self-managed Confluence Server and Data Center from 1.3.0 up to the fixed releases below. Atlassian Cloud is not affected.
- Check the version at Administration > General Configuration > System Information or in the page footer.
Fix:
1. Upgrade. First fixed releases: 7.4.17, 7.13.7, 7.14.3, 7.15.2, 7.16.4, 7.17.4, 7.18.1. Today, move to a current supported Long Term Support release, which also fixes later critical bugs (such as CVE-2023-22515 and CVE-2023-22527). Data Center clusters can use a rolling upgrade.
2. If you truly can't upgrade at once, Atlassian published a temporary workaround that replaces specific xwork/webwork JAR files (and one class file for 6.0.0-7.14.2) in WEB-INF/lib; follow the advisory exactly on every node. It's a stopgap, not a fix.
3. Until fixed, take the instance off the internet or restrict it to VPN/trusted IPs.
4. If the server was internet-facing and unpatched, assume compromise: look for unknown JSP files and web shells in the Confluence install, unexpected processes and outbound connections, new admin accounts and installed apps, then rebuild from a clean state, restore data from a known-good backup, and rotate credentials stored in or reachable from Confluence (database, LDAP, integrations).
Verify: System Information shows a fixed (preferably current LTS) version on every node, and the instance is no longer reachable from untrusted networks.
