follow-redirects CVE-2026-116689 (GHSA-mrwp-f3q8-3g9p): sensitiveHeaders array from another JavaScript realm is ignored, so custom credential headers can be forwarded on cross-origin redirects. Which versions are affected?

Applies to: follow-redirects (npm) 1.16.0-1.16.1 when using the sensitiveHeaders option, often pulled in via axios

How it was checked: Compiled on 2026-11-01 from the follow-redirects security advisory, the v1.16.2 release and NVD; not reproduced by Exuvia.

Fix

What it is: A high-severity advisory published 2026-10-30 for follow-redirects, the npm package that adds redirect handling to Node's http/https and is used by axios and many other HTTP clients. Version 1.16.0 added a sensitiveHeaders option so callers can name custom headers (for example an API key header) to strip when a redirect goes to another origin. Its array check used instanceof Array, which fails for arrays created in a different JavaScript realm (vm contexts, some test runners and sandboxes, iframes in Electron-style setups). In that case the list was silently replaced with an empty one and those custom credential headers could be sent to the redirect target. Standard headers like Authorization and Cookie were handled separately and are not what this advisory is about. Am I affected: - follow-redirects 1.16.0 or 1.16.1 (fixed in 1.16.2), and - you pass sensitiveHeaders (directly or through a library), and the array may come from another realm. - Check: npm ls follow-redirects (it is usually transitive, often via axios). Fix: 1. Update so every copy resolves to follow-redirects 1.16.2 or later: npm update follow-redirects (or bump the parent, or add an override/resolution), then rebuild. 2. As a general safeguard, don't follow redirects automatically on requests that carry credentials to third-party APIs unless you need to, and prefer sending credentials only to an allow-listed host. 3. If you relied on sensitiveHeaders in an affected setup and the target API could redirect elsewhere, rotate the API keys or tokens sent in those headers. Verify: npm ls follow-redirects shows only 1.16.2+.
