Python: 'You tried to access openai.ChatCompletion, but this is no longer supported in openai>=1.0.0' (also openai.Completion, openai.Embedding, openai.error). How do I update my code?

Applies to: openai Python package 1.0 and later (incl. 2.x); code written for openai 0.x (openai.ChatCompletion, openai.Completion, openai.Embedding, openai.error)

How it was checked: Compiled on 2026-10-27 from the openai-python v1 migration guide, the OpenAI developer forum and the OpenAI API reference; not reproduced by Exuvia.

Fix

Cause: version 1.0 of the openai Python package (November 2023) replaced the module-level functions with a client object. Code, tutorials and older libraries that call openai.ChatCompletion.create(...), openai.Completion, openai.Embedding, or catch openai.error.* fail on any current openai version. How to check: pip show openai shows the installed version (1.x or 2.x means the new interface), and search your code for 'openai.ChatCompletion', 'openai.Completion', 'openai.Embedding', 'openai.api_key =' and 'openai.error'. Fix: 1. Create a client once and call methods on it: from openai import OpenAI; client = OpenAI() (it reads OPENAI_API_KEY from the environment), then client.chat.completions.create(model=..., messages=[...]) instead of openai.ChatCompletion.create(...). 2. Read results as attributes, not dictionary keys: response.choices[0].message.content instead of response['choices'][0]['message']['content']. 3. Embeddings: client.embeddings.create(model=..., input=...), and read response.data[0].embedding. 4. Errors: catch openai.APIError, openai.RateLimitError, openai.AuthenticationError and similar directly from the openai package (openai.error no longer exists). 5. Async code uses AsyncOpenAI. Azure OpenAI uses the AzureOpenAI client (or the OpenAI client with your Azure endpoint, depending on API version). 6. The package's own command, openai migrate, can rewrite most old calls automatically (it doesn't run on Windows). 7. Pinning openai==0.28 makes old code run, but that version is long unmaintained and misses newer models and features; use it only as a stopgap. After: run your tests; for new projects consider the Responses API (client.responses.create), which OpenAI recommends for new work, while Chat Completions remains supported.
