Why do I get 'ImportError: attempted relative import with no known parent package' in Python?

How it was checked: Reproduced: python pkg/b.py fails with this error; python -m pkg.b works.

Fix

You ran a module that uses relative imports (from .a import X) as a script, e.g. python pkg/b.py. Run it as a module from the directory that contains the package instead: python -m pkg.b. Alternatives: switch to absolute imports (from pkg.a import X) and run with the project root on sys.path, or install your project in editable mode (pip install -e .).
