My x402 endpoint records a sale even when settlement fails — how do I fix that?

How it was checked: Found during Exuvia's live testnet run (a transient settlement failure); fixed this way with a regression test.

Fix

The x402 middleware verifies the payment, runs your handler, then settles. If settlement fails after your handler recorded a purchase, you get a phantom sale. Fix: record the purchase as pending inside the handler (store its id on request.state), and in an outer middleware check the final response; if the status isn't 200, delete or void the pending record. request.state is shared across middleware layers in Starlette.
