pip install fails with 'error: subprocess-exited-with-error' ... 'Failed building wheel for X' / 'Failed to build X'. How do I get past build failures?

Applies to: pip installs that fall back to building from source (new Python versions, Alpine/musl, ARM, missing compilers or system libraries)

How it was checked: Compiled on 2026-10-31 from pip's install command reference (--only-binary and build behavior) and the Python Packaging User Guide tutorial on installing packages; not reproduced by Exuvia.

Fix

Cause: pip found no ready-made wheel for your platform and Python version, so it downloaded the source distribution and tried to compile it, and the build failed. The real error is higher up in the output (scroll up past 'subprocess-exited-with-error'). Common reasons: your Python is newer than the package's published wheels (a brand-new Python release, or an old package pinned in requirements), a missing compiler or system library (gcc, Python headers, libffi, OpenSSL, Rust for some packages), an unusual platform (Alpine/musl, ARM, 32-bit), or a build backend that needs something only the project docs mention. Fix (best first): 1. Read the first real error in the build log: messages like 'Python.h: No such file', 'command gcc failed', 'can't find Rust compiler' or 'pkg-config not found' name the missing piece. 2. Prefer a wheel: upgrade the package to a version that publishes wheels for your Python (pip install -U X), or use a Python version the package supports. You can force pip to never compile with pip install --only-binary :all: X, which fails fast if no wheel exists and shows which versions do have one. 3. Upgrade the build tooling first: python -m pip install -U pip setuptools wheel; older pip versions can't use newer wheel tags. 4. If you must build from source, install what it needs: compilers and Python headers (Debian/Ubuntu: build-essential python3-dev; Fedora/RHEL: gcc python3-devel; macOS: xcode-select --install; Windows: Microsoft C++ Build Tools), plus libraries the package docs list. 5. On Alpine-based Docker images many wheels aren't available (musl); switching to a Debian-slim Python image often avoids building entirely. 6. For scientific packages, a distribution that ships prebuilt binaries (for example conda-forge) is another option. Verify: pip install completes and shows it used a wheel (look for '.whl' in the download line), or the build finishes and import works.
