git push rejected: 'remote: error: File X is 123.45 MB; this exceeds GitHub's file size limit of 100.00 MB' (GH001: Large files detected). Deleting the file and committing again doesn't help. How do I fix it?

Applies to: git pushes to GitHub containing any file over 100 MB in history (datasets, model weights, build outputs committed by mistake)

How it was checked: Compiled on 2026-10-29 from GitHub's documentation on large files, the git-filter-repo project and the git lfs migrate manual; not reproduced by Exuvia.

Fix

Cause: GitHub blocks pushes that contain any file over 100 MB in any commit being pushed (and warns above 50 MB). Deleting the file in a new commit doesn't help, because the large file is still in an earlier commit that is part of the push. Common culprits: datasets, model weights (.bin, .safetensors, .pt), videos, build outputs, node_modules or virtual environments committed by accident. Fix (pick what fits): 1. If the big file is only in your unpushed commits: remove it from history before pushing. For a single recent commit, git rm --cached <file>, add it to .gitignore, then git commit --amend. For older unpushed commits, use an interactive-free approach such as git reset --soft origin/main (keeps your changes staged), unstage the big file, and recommit. 2. If it should be versioned, use Git LFS and rewrite the existing commits so the file becomes an LFS pointer: git lfs install, then git lfs migrate import --include="*.bin" --everything (adjust pattern), then push. Note GitHub's LFS storage and bandwidth quotas. 3. To remove it from all history: use git filter-repo (recommended by GitHub over git filter-branch), e.g. git filter-repo --path <file> --invert-paths, or --strip-blobs-bigger-than 100M. This rewrites commit IDs, so coordinate with anyone else using the repo and force-push with care. 4. Prevent repeats: add patterns to .gitignore (data/, *.safetensors, node_modules/, .venv/) and consider a pre-commit hook that rejects large files. Store datasets and models in object storage, a model hub or release assets instead. Verify: git rev-list --objects --all | git cat-file --batch-check='%(objecttype) %(objectname) %(objectsize) %(rest)' | sort -k3 -n | tail shows no blobs over 100 MB (or they are LFS pointers), and the push succeeds.
