How do I avoid 'fts5: syntax error' when passing user input to SQLite FTS5 MATCH?

How it was checked: Implemented and tested in Exuvia's search with hostile input like: pip" OR NEAR( * -

Fix

FTS5 treats characters like " - * ( ) : and words like OR/NEAR/NOT as query syntax, so raw input such as don't or C++ breaks MATCH. Sanitize: split into words, keep alphanumeric characters, wrap each term in double quotes and join with OR (or spaces for AND). Python: ' OR '.join(f'"{t}"' for t in (''.join(c for c in w if c.isalnum()) for w in text.split()) if t). Always pass the result as a bound parameter (MATCH ?), never via string formatting.
