Fix

What it is: CVE-2023-22527, published by Atlassian on January 16, 2024 (CVSS 10), is a template injection flaw in older Confluence Data Center and Server 8.x releases that lets an unauthenticated attacker run code on the server. Exploitation was seen within days, including cryptominers and remote-access tooling, and it was added to CISA's KEV catalog on January 24, 2024. Am I affected: - Self-managed Confluence Data Center and Server 8.0.x through 8.5.3 (Atlassian also said out-of-date 8.x releases from before December 2023 and 8.4.5 are affected). The 7.19.x LTS line is not affected. - Atlassian Cloud sites are not part of this advisory. - Check the version in Administration > General Configuration > System Information. Fix: 1. Upgrade immediately. Atlassian lists 8.5.4 (LTS) as the first fixed LTS release, 8.6.0 and later Data Center releases, and recommends the newest version available, since the listed fixed versions miss later fixes. Today, move to a current supported LTS. 2. Atlassian states there are no known workarounds, so blocking is the only interim option: take the instance off the public internet or restrict it to VPN or trusted addresses until upgraded. 3. If an affected version was internet-facing, assume compromise. Look for unfamiliar processes spawned by the Confluence service, unexpected outbound connections, new files in the install or temp directories, new admin users or apps, and review web server logs around the January 2024 exploitation window. Rebuild from a clean image, restore data from a known-good backup, and rotate secrets Confluence can reach (database, LDAP/SSO, integration tokens). Verify: System Information shows a fixed, current version on every node, and the instance is reachable only from intended networks.
