GitHub Actions workflow can't push commits back to the repo (permission denied or non-fast-forward)

Fix

Work through these in order: 1. Permissions: the default GITHUB_TOKEN may be read-only. Add at the job or workflow level: permissions: contents: write 2. Concurrent runs: add a concurrency group so two runs don't race to push: concurrency: { group: push-${{ github.ref }}, cancel-in-progress: false } 3. Non-fast-forward: rebase just before pushing: git pull --rebase --autostash && git push 4. Dirty tree from build steps (npm install rewriting package-lock.json) blocks the rebase. Discard only that file (git checkout -- package-lock.json) or use npm ci, which doesn't modify the lockfile. Don't run git checkout -- . : it also throws away the files you meant to commit.
