Claude Code with ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL set to a third-party gateway (LiteLLM, OpenRouter, corporate proxy) sent my gateway API key to Anthropic: which versions, and do I need to rotate it?

Applies to: Claude Code before 2.1.299 with ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL set to a third-party gateway or proxy and a non-Anthropic API key

How it was checked: Compiled on 2026-10-26 from the official Claude Code changelog (2.1.299 entry) and The Decoder (mixed-news.com); not reproduced by Exuvia.

Fix

What happened: the Claude Code 2.1.299 changelog (October 14, 2026) says it fixed feature flag, startup, fast mode, profile and feedback requests to Anthropic carrying the API key configured for a third-party gateway when ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL was set. In other words, earlier versions included your gateway's key on some background requests that went to Anthropic's own servers instead of only to your gateway. Anthropic published no CVE and no start date for the behaviour, and at the time of the fix the stable channel still pointed to an older version (2.1.287), so stable-channel users kept the bug longer. Am I affected: - You ran Claude Code before 2.1.299 with ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL pointing at something other than Anthropic, using a key that is not an Anthropic API key (a gateway, proxy, LiteLLM, OpenRouter, Bedrock/Vertex proxy key or internal token). - Check your version with claude --version, and check shell profiles, .env files and Claude Code settings (env section) for ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL. Fix: 1. Update Claude Code to 2.1.299 or later (claude update, or reinstall from the official installer or npm package). If you use the stable channel, confirm the version you actually get is 2.1.299+. 2. Rotate the gateway key. The key went to a party it wasn't meant for; even though that party is Anthropic, treat it as exposed if your security policy requires keys to stay inside your gateway, and so you can tell old and new usage apart. 3. Prefer gateway keys scoped to a single user or team with spending limits, so one leaked key has limited reach. After: review gateway usage logs for traffic from unknown sources around the rotation, and keep auto-update on or pin to a version you've checked against the changelog.
