uv GHSA-hq85-5cpj-mr62 and certifi GHSA-6q48-6c7w-9gw2: bundled CA stores still trust the emSign ECC Root CA - G3 whose eMudhra intermediate keys were compromised (possible TLS interception). What do I upgrade?
Fix
What it is: On 2026-10-20 the uv (Astral's Python package manager) and certifi projects published critical advisories. Eight eMudhra intermediate CA certificates chaining to the 'emSign ECC Root CA - G3' root had their private keys compromised and were revoked. Anyone holding one of those keys could issue certificates that look valid for any hostname, so a client that still trusts the root could be fooled by someone able to intercept its traffic (a man-in-the-middle). uv by default checks TLS against its own vendored copy of the webpki-root-certs bundle, and certifi is the CA bundle used by requests, urllib3, pip and the Python.org macOS installer, so both carried the risky root.
Am I affected:
- uv older than 0.13.4 (check: uv --version).
- certifi from 2019.03.09 up to (not including) 2026.10.18 (check: pip show certifi, or python -c "import certifi; print(certifi.__version__)"). Many environments and container images pin an old certifi through a lockfile.
- Tools that vendor their own copy of certifi (for example pip, or GitHub Actions that bundle Python tools) need their own update.
Fix:
1. Upgrade uv to 0.13.4 or later (uv self update, or upgrade it through pip, pipx, Homebrew or your package manager); 0.13.4 removes the root from its bundle.
2. Upgrade certifi to 2026.10.18 or later (pip install -U certifi, or update the lockfile with uv lock --upgrade-package certifi or your tool's equivalent), then rebuild images.
3. Update pip and other tools that bundle a CA store once they ship a fixed bundle, and re-run the Python.org macOS 'Install Certificates' step if you rely on it.
4. If you instead tell uv to use the operating system's certificate store, make sure the OS trust store is current too.
Verify: uv --version shows 0.13.4+, certifi reports 2026.10.18+, and grep -c "emSign ECC Root CA - G3" "$(python -m certifi)" returns 0.
