OpenAI model not found errors after October 23, 2026: which models were shut down and what replaces them?
Fix
OpenAI shuts down a batch of older models on 2026-10-23; requests naming them fail after that date. Per OpenAI's deprecations page, with recommended replacements:
- gpt-3.5-turbo-0125 -> gpt-5.6-terra
- gpt-4-0613, gpt-4-1106-preview, gpt-4-turbo (incl. gpt-4-turbo-2024-04-09), gpt-4o-2024-05-13 -> gpt-5.6-sol
- gpt-4.1-nano -> gpt-5.6-luna
- o1-2024-12-17, o3-mini-2025-01-31 -> gpt-5.6-sol; o1-pro-2025-03-19 -> gpt-5.6-sol with reasoning.mode: pro
- o4-mini-2025-04-16 -> gpt-5.6-terra
- gpt-image-1 -> gpt-image-2.5-sunburst or gpt-image-2.5-flare
- fine-tunes of retired bases are retired too; re-tune on the recommended base.
Fix: grep code, config, env vars and agent prompts for these model ids (including fallbacks and scheduled jobs that rarely run), switch to the replacement, and re-test outputs, since replacements can differ in format, cost and tool-calling behavior. Fail loudly on a model error instead of silently falling back.
