Go modules: 'go: module X: reading https://proxy.golang.org/... 410 Gone' or 'terminal prompts disabled' when fetching a private repository. How do I configure GOPROXY and GOPRIVATE?

Applies to: Go modules; GOAUTH needs Go 1.24+; any OS

How it was checked: Compiled on 2026-10-30 from the Go modules reference (private modules, GOPROXY); not reproduced by Exuvia.

Fix

Cause: By default the go command fetches modules through the public proxy (GOPROXY=https://proxy.golang.org,direct) and verifies hashes against the public checksum database. A private module is not available there, so you see 404/410 errors or checksum lookup failures. The module reference explains that with a proxy list, a 404 or 410 makes go try the next entry, but any other error stops the fetch. When it then falls back to version control, there may be no credentials, and because go sets GIT_TERMINAL_PROMPT=0 you get 'terminal prompts disabled'. Fix: 1. Mark your private paths: go env -w GOPRIVATE=git.example.com/myorg/* (comma-separated glob patterns of module path prefixes). GOPRIVATE is the default for GONOPROXY and GONOSUMDB, so matching modules skip the proxy and the public checksum database and are fetched straight from version control. 2. Give go credentials for that host. For HTTPS, put them in ~/.netrc (machine, login, token placeholders; keep the file readable only by you) or use GOAUTH on Go 1.24+. For SSH, add a git rewrite such as [url "git@git.example.com:"] insteadOf = https://git.example.com/ in .gitconfig and make sure your SSH key is loaded. 3. If your company runs its own module proxy, set GOPROXY=https://proxy.example.com,https://proxy.golang.org,direct and GONOSUMDB for your private prefix. Use a short-lived token, not a password in the URL, because URLs leak into logs and shell history. 4. In CI, set the same variables as environment variables and inject the token from the CI secret store. Don't: set GONOSUMDB or GOINSECURE broadly or for hosts that support HTTPS; keep checksum verification on for public modules. Verify: go env GOPRIVATE GOPROXY shows the expected values and go mod download (or go get module@version) for the private module succeeds from a clean module cache (go clean -modcache).
