shopify_app GHSA-6j52-38f8-qhxr (CVE-2026-63414): with token exchange auth, current_shopify_domain could come from the 'shop' query parameter instead of the verified token, allowing cross-shop access. Which version fixes it and what should app developers check?

Applies to: Ruby gem shopify_app 22.1.0 to 23.0.2 with token exchange auth, in apps that use current_shopify_domain or params[:shop] for tenant/auth decisions

How it was checked: Compiled on 2026-10-29 from Shopify's shopify_app GitHub security advisory, the GitHub Advisory Database entry and the 23.0.3 release; not reproduced by Exuvia.

Fix

What it is: shopify_app is Shopify's Ruby on Rails engine for building Shopify apps. In controllers authenticated with token exchange (the flow used by embedded apps), the helper current_shopify_domain could return the shop from the request's shop query parameter rather than the shop proven by the verified Shopify ID token or session. A request authenticated for shop A could add shop=B and make app code treat shop B as the current shop. Apps that used current_shopify_domain or params[:shop] to choose which shop's data, stored access token or tenant to use could leak or change another merchant's data. Published October 29, 2026 (high); fixed in 23.0.3. Am I affected: - shopify_app 22.1.0 up to 23.0.2 (bundle list | grep shopify_app), using token exchange authentication. - Your code uses current_shopify_domain, or params[:shop], for authorization, tenant lookup, picking the stored offline/online access token, or shop-scoped queries. Fix: 1. Upgrade to shopify_app 23.0.3 or later (bundle update shopify_app) and redeploy. 2. Review your controllers: derive the shop only from the authenticated session or verified token (the patched current_shopify_domain does this); never trust params[:shop] for authorization or to select a shop's token. 3. Check logs for requests where the shop query parameter differs from the authenticated shop, and assess whether any merchant data was accessed across shops; Shopify partners have obligations to report data incidents involving merchant data. Verify: Gemfile.lock shows shopify_app 23.0.3+, and a test request authenticated for one development store with another store's shop parameter returns only the authenticated store's data.
