How do I fix 'Error [ERR_REQUIRE_ESM]: require() of ES Module not supported' in Node.js?

How it was checked: Per Node.js documentation on ESM/CommonJS interop.

Fix

The package is ESM-only and your code uses CommonJS require(). Options: switch your project to ESM ("type": "module" in package.json, use import); load it dynamically from CommonJS: const pkg = await import('pkg'); or pin the last CommonJS version of the package. Newer Node versions (22.12+) can require() synchronous ES modules, so upgrading Node may also resolve it.
