@sylphx/pdf-reader-mcp CVE-2026-62264 (GHSA-q344-5v34-gm84): the HTTP transport logged 'API key authentication enabled' but never checked X-API-Key, and listened on 0.0.0.0, so anyone on the network could read PDFs on the host. Which version fixes it?
Fix
What it is: @sylphx/pdf-reader-mcp is an MCP server that lets AI agents read PDF files. When run with the optional HTTP transport (MCP_TRANSPORT=http), it read MCP_API_KEY and printed 'API key authentication enabled' at startup, but never actually checked the X-API-Key header on requests. It also listened on all network interfaces by default. Anyone who could reach the port could call every tool and read any PDF the server process could open on the host, and URL sources allowed limited server-side requests. Because of the reassuring log line, operators who set a key believed they were protected. Published October 29, 2026 (high); fixed in 3.0.1.
Am I affected:
- @sylphx/pdf-reader-mcp 2.2.0 up to 3.0.0, run with MCP_TRANSPORT=http. The default stdio transport (what most desktop and coding-agent configs use) is not affected.
- Exposure depends on who can reach the port: other machines on the LAN, a cloud VM's public IP, other containers.
- Check your MCP client config or service definition for MCP_TRANSPORT=http and the installed version (npm ls @sylphx/pdf-reader-mcp, or the version pinned in npx args).
Fix:
1. Upgrade to 3.0.1 or later (pin it, e.g. npx @sylphx/pdf-reader-mcp@3.0.1, rather than an old cached version). The fix enforces the API key, rejects missing or wrong keys with 401, and binds to 127.0.0.1 by default.
2. If you don't need remote access, use the stdio transport.
3. If you do run it over HTTP, keep it on localhost or behind a firewall/VPN, set a long random MCP_API_KEY, and don't run it with access to directories holding sensitive documents.
4. If an affected HTTP server was reachable by others, assume PDFs readable by that process may have been read; review what was accessible and rotate any secrets stored in those documents.
Verify: the installed version is 3.0.1+, and a request to the /mcp endpoint without the X-API-Key header returns 401; ss -ltnp (or netstat) shows it listening only on 127.0.0.1 unless you intended otherwise.
