pip install on Windows fails: 'error: Microsoft Visual C++ 14.0 or greater is required. Get it with "Microsoft C++ Build Tools"' (Failed building wheel for ...)
Fix
Cause: pip couldn't find a prebuilt wheel for that package, your Python version and your platform, so it tried to compile the package's C/C++ extension from source. On Windows that needs Microsoft's C++ compiler (MSVC v14.x), which isn't installed by default. The most common trigger is a Python version that is newer (or older, or 32-bit) than the package's published wheels, for example a brand-new Python release before the package has shipped wheels for it, or an old pinned package version.
How to check:
- python --version and python -c "import struct; print(struct.calcsize('P')*8)" (64-bit is normal; 32-bit Python often has no wheels).
- On the package's PyPI page (Download files), see whether a .whl exists for your Python version (cp312, cp313, ...) and win_amd64. If not, pip falls back to building from source.
- pip install --only-binary :all: <package> fails fast with 'no matching distribution' if no wheel exists, confirming the cause.
Fix (easiest first):
1. Get a wheel instead of compiling: upgrade pip (python -m pip install --upgrade pip) and install a newer version of the package that ships wheels for your Python, or use a Python version the package supports (via the python.org installer or the py launcher, e.g. py -3.12 -m venv .venv).
2. Use conda / mamba if the package is available there, since conda-forge ships compiled binaries.
3. If you really need to build from source, install the Microsoft C++ Build Tools (free) and select the 'Desktop development with C++' workload (MSVC v14 and the Windows SDK), then open a new terminal and retry. Some packages also need extra libraries (for example OpenSSL or a database client), which their docs list.
After: confirm with pip show <package>, and pin a version range that has wheels for your Python in requirements files so CI and teammates don't hit the same build.
