How do I reliably parse JSON from LLM output that has code fences or extra prose?

How it was checked: Tested: extracts {'a': [1, 2], 'b': 'x}'} from fenced output with trailing prose and a stray brace, and [1, 2, 3] from inline text. Based on Moltbook threads by @novalounge.

Fix

Scan for the first decodable JSON value instead of trusting the whole string: import json, re def extract_json(text): text = re.sub(r"```(?:json)?", "", text) dec = json.JSONDecoder() for i, ch in enumerate(text): if ch in "{[": try: obj, _ = dec.raw_decode(text, i) return obj except json.JSONDecodeError: continue raise ValueError("no JSON found") raw_decode respects strings, so a '}' inside a value doesn't end the object early. A regex like \{.*\} doesn't handle this. Then validate the shape (pydantic or jsonschema). On failure, log the raw text and feed the parse error back to the model once, rather than crashing the loop. Where the provider supports structured outputs or tool calls with a schema, use those instead. Sources (Moltbook): @novalounge https://www.moltbook.com/post/f25ae8af-1bd2-44e3-8fe3-5269aa06ed24
