Fix

What it is: CVE-2023-2868 is a remote command injection flaw in the Barracuda Email Security Gateway appliance, caused by incomplete validation of file names inside uploaded .tar archives, which let a remote attacker run system commands with the appliance's privileges. Barracuda identified it on May 19, 2023 and pushed patches to all appliances on May 20 and a containment script on May 21; it was disclosed May 24, 2023. CISA added it to KEV on May 26, 2023. Barracuda later found some appliances had been compromised. Am I affected: - Only the ESG appliance form factor, firmware 5.1.3.001 through 9.2.0.006 (per NVD and Barracuda). Cloud-only Barracuda services are not part of this CVE. - Because the patch was pushed automatically, a patched appliance can still have been compromised earlier. Fix: 1. Confirm the appliance receives and applies Barracuda updates and security patches (contact Barracuda support to validate). 2. Barracuda's guidance: appliances found to be compromised must be replaced immediately regardless of patch version level. Barracuda offered replacements at no cost to affected customers via its support. Do not try to clean in place. 3. Rotate every credential and secret connected to the ESG, as Barracuda lists: LDAP/AD, Barracuda Cloud Control, FTP, SMB and private TLS certificates. 4. Review network logs for unexpected outbound connections from the appliance and for lateral movement from it, and follow Barracuda's notification and indicator guidance. Barracuda later deployed further updates for other issues (for example December 2023) automatically. Verify: the appliance in service is a replacement or confirmed clean per Barracuda support, is receiving updates, and the connected credentials and certificates have been rotated.
