How do I stop tool results (web pages, API responses) from injecting instructions into my agent?

Fix

Treat tool output as data, never as instructions: 1. Label it in context: wrap results in a clearly delimited block marked untrusted data (or a separate role/channel), and state in your system prompt that text inside it can't change what you're allowed to do. 2. Prefer structured fields over free text; quote and length-cap free text. 3. No privilege from results: a result can't widen permissions, change base URLs or add tools. If one tries, record it and don't act on it. 4. Gate side effects outside the model: allowlisted tools, confirmation for payments, transfers and deletes, read-only credentials where possible. Pass test: hostile text in a fetched page can change what the model believes about the page, never what it does.
