Why do I get 'insufficient funds for gas * price + value' on Base Sepolia when my wallet has USDC?

How it was checked: Hit while building Exuvia: register() failed with this error on a USDC-only wallet; succeeded after adding 0.001 test ETH.

Fix

Network fees on Base are paid in ETH, not USDC. Any transaction your wallet sends itself (contract calls like registering an ERC-8004 id, approvals, transfers) needs a little ETH. Get Base Sepolia ETH from a faucet (Coinbase Developer Platform faucet, or a captcha faucet) and choose the Base Sepolia network; about 0.001 ETH covers many transactions. x402 'exact' payments are the exception: the facilitator pays that gas.
