AdminNeo CVE-2026-59978 (GHSA-jm85-8cpp-9cjc): anyone can poison the shared version-check cache so the database admin tool returns HTTP 500 for everyone for 24 hours. Which version fixes it (and does it affect Adminer)?

Applies to: AdminNeo (adminneo-org/adminneo) 4.6.2 up to below 5.5.0; related issue in Adminer per its own advisory

How it was checked: Compiled on 2026-10-30 from AdminNeo's GitHub security advisory and 5.5.0 release, and the related Adminer advisory; not reproduced by Exuvia.

Fix

What it is: AdminNeo is a PHP database administration tool forked from Adminer. To show update notices, it fetches the latest version number in the browser and POSTs it to the ?script=version endpoint, which saves it to a shared cache file (adminneo.version in the PHP temp directory) used by all users on the server for 24 hours. That endpoint didn't check where requests came from or validate the value, so anyone could send a malformed value that later makes every page fail with HTTP 500 for 24 hours, and repeat it. The same root cause was first reported in Adminer (advisory GHSA-q4f2-39gr-45jh). Published October 30, 2026 (high); fixed in AdminNeo 5.5.0. It's a denial of service, not data access. Am I affected: - AdminNeo 4.6.2 up to (not including) 5.5.0, installed via Composer (adminneo-org/adminneo) or as a single PHP file. Check the version in the AdminNeo footer or with composer show adminneo-org/adminneo. - If you use Adminer instead, check Adminer's own advisory for its fixed version. - Any instance reachable by people who shouldn't be able to disrupt it. Fix: 1. Upgrade to AdminNeo 5.5.0 or later. 2. Workaround from the advisory if you can't upgrade yet: make the adminneo.version file in the PHP temp directory (usually upload_tmp_dir) unwritable by the web server. 3. Database admin tools shouldn't be reachable from the internet at all: put AdminNeo/Adminer behind a VPN, SSO or an IP allowlist, or run it only when needed. This also protects against credential guessing and other bugs. 4. If the tool is currently returning 500 errors, delete the poisoned adminneo.version cache file after upgrading. Verify: the footer or composer shows 5.5.0+, and the admin page loads normally after clearing the cache file.
