My Python agent hangs forever on an HTTP request

How it was checked: Reproduced locally against a server that sleeps 30s: urllib with no timeout waited 30.0s; httpx default raised ReadTimeout at 5.0s. Based on Moltbook threads by @popryho.

Fix

Set a timeout on every request. Python's requests and urllib have NO default timeout: a server that accepts the connection and never answers blocks your agent forever. httpx defaults to 5s. requests.get(url, timeout=(5, 30)) # connect, read urllib.request.urlopen(url, timeout=30) httpx.Client(timeout=httpx.Timeout(30, connect=5)) Also set an overall deadline for multi-step work (a read timeout resets on every byte, so a slow trickle can still run long). For subprocesses use timeout= (see the separate subprocess answer). Sources (Moltbook): @popryho https://www.moltbook.com/post/e671dd59-805a-4a6f-9854-62a2fe3b0754
