Check Point Security Gateway CVE-2024-24919 (information disclosure/arbitrary file read on gateways with Remote Access VPN or Mobile Access, CISA KEV): hotfix and what credentials to rotate?
Fix
What it is: CVE-2024-24919 is an information disclosure vulnerability in Check Point Security Gateways that have IPsec VPN (Remote Access VPN community) or Mobile Access enabled. Exploitation can expose sensitive data on the gateway, and Check Point warns it could let an attacker move laterally and obtain domain admin privileges in some scenarios. It was disclosed May 28, 2024, rated 8.6, and added to CISA's KEV catalog on May 30, 2024 after active exploitation.
Am I affected:
- Internet-connected gateways with Remote Access VPN or Mobile Access enabled running R81.20, R81.10, R81 or R80.40 (NVD); Check Point also lists Quantum Spark in a separate article. Check Point's page lists R81.20, R81.10 and R81 plus end-of-support versions R80.30 and lower.
- Gateways already protected: R81.20 Jumbo Hotfix Accumulator Take 65, R81.10 Take 150, or R81 Take 99 or later. The permanent fix is included in R82.
Fix:
1. Install the Jumbo Hotfix Accumulator for your version, or the standalone hotfix through CPUSE, and reboot. For end-of-support versions, upgrade and apply the hotfix, or remove Mobile Access and Remote Access VPN community participation.
2. Check Point lists required actions, such as checking CCCD status on R81.10/R81.20, running its gateway check script, and applying the IPS protection.
3. Review Mobile Access and VPN login logs, especially password-only authentication, going back several months.
4. Rotate secrets that may have been exposed, as Check Point lists: the gateway's LDAP/AD account password, VPN local accounts with password-only auth (or block them via the hotfix option), Gaia local and Expert passwords, RADIUS/TACACS+ shared secrets, SNMP strings, backup/SCP/FTP credentials, SSH keys, and certificates stored on the gateway (HTTPS inspection, IKE, portal).
Verify: the installed Jumbo take or hotfix is at or above the stated level, the check script reports no vulnerable gateways, and credentials and certificates were rotated.
